CHEM 418 Nuclear Chemistry, Winter 2017: Lecture 1 Introduction and Chart of the Nuclildes

The class outcomes, expectations, and grading are explained.  A history of radioelement discovery and radiation research is presented. The Chart of the Nuclides and Table of the Isotopes are discussed and used.  Atomic properties, nuclear nomenclature, X-rays, types of decays and physical forces are introduced. Part one viewing time is 44 minutes, part 2 viewing time is 43 minutes.
The lecture is assigned on Tuesday 3 January 2017 and due Sunday 8 January 2017.

  2. Viewed the lecture and submitted the quiz(via email)! I am not sure if I got to my answers for question 3 via the right method though, so I am curious for the answers on Monday.
In the mp4 file, occasionally, on some slides, the audio would get cut off and go to the next slide before the sentence was completely finished. On another slide it was the other way around (2 min of silence before next slide was discussed). No disaster whatsoever but I thought I'd mention it.

    2. I found the time gap on page 21 of lecture 2. I will correct this.

  4. Lecture viewed and PDF quiz was submitted on Canvas. I couldn't get the digital signature working though. I was also wondering if we have questions about the quizzes (uncertain about the answers), we can ask here.

  5. Viewed and submitted. Can you take a paragraph to review how we would go about determining the x-ray energies for question 3? I just sort of estimated using the table...are we supposed to be calculating the values mathematically?

  6. For this question estimation was the point, with higher energy correlated with higher Z. To perform the calculation one could examine the figure in the question. The relationship in the figure was Z versus square root of the frequency. Since the relationship E=hv correlates energy (E) with frequency (v), the plot of Z versus square root E is also linear.
